THE PHOENIX CYCLE was devised by Katy Bowman and produced by Handspan for the Melbourne Moomba Festival where it appeared in both the Family Day Parade and the Night Parade.
Large conical images and sweeping capes were designed by Mary Sutherland and constructed with paper. Masked figures wearing large capes were choreographed to spread fan-like wings that flanked soft sculptured red cones as they processed down Melbourne's central Swanston St thoroughfare. Spot performances by firemen clowns complemented the walking images and engaged the crowds that lined the street as they travelled.
THE PHOENIX CYCLE was the forerunner to Katy's 1999 work created with Handspan where its shapes were further explored in The Cone Project.
